Emma Lazarus’s sonnet “The New Colossus” expresses that the statue of liberty is a welcoming gift to all immigrant. Lazarus states that all people who wish to have freedom and a better life is welcomed. The colossus being female is significant because compared to the old colossus; the new colossus is not as intimidating. With the new colossus not as frightening, it puts forth a more welcoming sentiment.
