Tan and her mother faced discrimination because of her lack of proper English. people pretend they can not understand her, or would ignore her all together. they did not take her serious even in the instance of a medical issue. Tan decided to become a writer due to the lack of conviction by her teachers of her writing ability.
Why did Tan decide to become a writer?
Tan came from a family where her mother spoke broken English.
her mother's English almost had an effect on limiting her possibility in life as well.so being that her mom had broken English made tan want to become a writer so that she can teach English proper even though she came from a different culture. tan is rebellious in nature and enjoy the challenges of disproving assumptions made about her. the teachers tried to make her go and major into something different just because they didn't think she can become a writer due to her mom English and hers. her being a Asian american had allot to do with her becoming a writer.
The challenges that tan and her mother faced were very difficult at times. Sometimes tans mother would be misunderstood and even at times ignored because they didn't want to deal with her. Amy Tan decided to become a writer because she wanted to beat the odds. Not very many Chinese people seemed very strong in there English language, many Chinese people usually resort to math or science, she did not. She wanted to prove the people who told her she wasn't a writer, wrong. Amy tan proved all of them wrong by publishing a book called "Joy Luck Club" and they made a movie about it.
I Think Tan wanted to become a writer to prove all the doubters wrong. They said that Chines specialize in math and since and do to the way they lived at home and herd their mothers tongue that they could not consed in English and writing. She wanted to prove everyone wrong by becoming a righter to show the racist minded people that the are wrong and that she could seceded in that field. Now she is a successful writer and as a few books published.
Amy Tan became a writer, I think, to prove to herself and others that Chinese-Americans could speak, read, and write just as good as any other American. Her whole childhood was filled with experiences that confirmed earlier theories she had. Because certain people would ignore Tan and her mother, she believed that only "proper", "un-fractured" English would be recognized in America. Tan also believed that, because a majority of Chinese-Americans were not as experienced in "proper" English, that teachers would push them toward classes and careers that they believed they should take; classes such as mathematics
Amy Tan became a writer because she wanted to prove to herself that she is not bad at English. She learned her English that was not grammatically correct and never noticed that it was wrong until later on in life. Her mothers limited English shaped her language as a child.
Tan decided to become a writer because she's so influenced in writing. Although, they told her she couldn't be a writer because of her lack of skill it still didn't stop her from becoming a writer and proving to them that she can. Tan also made a big hit of her number one selling book called "Joy Luck Club". Very interesting that some one like her can do something big and not let anyone get to her head.
Tan and her mother faced many challenges because Tan always felt it affected the way she was and it limited her to possibilities in her life. She hated to be treated differently and not equally. Tan decided to become a writer because she hated that people always judged and did not give the chineese the same attention. They did not believe in her. She wanted too prove people wrong that she could do it.
From what i have read allot of the difficulty Amy Tan had was many people made assumptions about her by the way she looked and by the way her mother talked. the biggest reason she became a writer was to prove to all the people that she could be a writer and not just what they had stereotyped her because of her "mother tongue" Amy Tan had been hearing the way she talked and slipped in to every once and a while but the biggest issue was when others heard how her mother talked.
tan decide to become a writer because of her family. her mom does speak English but sometime people like to act like they can not understand her. most of the people can not understand her mom but everyone can read. she saw how is the people trying to make themselves like not understanding that make her to decide to be a writer.
As she shows in her novel, people stereotype in physical features and races.
It is true that a “broken” English at home can lead someone to have a poor vocabulary, since is the first way of communication an individual learns. As an individual feels or get confident when speaking even when they are not speaking the right way, that someone is leading his way to a wrong vocabulary, which might not be too useful and get stuck on just Colloquial language.
Since 9.1 percent or an estimated 4.4 million students speak different languages, courses should have a side course focused in a correct form of speech or communication.
Having friends understand 50 percent, or maybe 80 percent of what your mother says is quite a challenge, but having them say "...they understand none of it, as if she were speaking pure Chinese." is beyond a challenge. Tan and her mother would hear that the English her mother speaks is "Broken" or "Fractured". Not getting the respect or attention in banks and medical facilities is not only challenging, but is disrespectful, and was an everyday part of their lives. To say that Tan and her mother faced a challenge with her language, is and understatement to say the least, considering that normal society would act as if they couldn't understand her or hear what she was trying to say.
Tan came from a family that her mother talks really bad English. They faced a lot of discrimination by their lack of talking English. Tan teacher want her to change her major like make her interest in another thing but Tan don't want she want to became a English writer. All the challenges she had that is what made her be an writter.
The challenges Tan and her mother would face was tan mother didn't speak English properly. she wasn't born with speaking two language's so it was more difficult for her to understand . when they would go to department stores, banks and at restaurants they wouldn't give her good service and at times pretended not to understand her. also Tans mother not speaking English will also effect on limiting her possibilities in her life.
The challenge of her and the mother was passing through is very tough for them because she was thinking that she was born with another language which was not English . Even when ever they went to department store ,Bank, and restaurant people are not paying attention on them. she was thinking of her achievement test in the school epically .I,Q tests and SAT. She was worry because her friend told her that they only understand about 50% of her language that she speak .
The challenge of her and her mother was speaking English perfectly. Tan's mother did not speak English perfectly, and only about 50 percent could understand her. Everywhere they went, people would ignore them because they were speaking "broken English". It was difficult for them because they felt out of place because people were ignoring them. Another thing is if tan's mother did not speak English it will limit the possibilities in her life to achieve success.
Some of the challenges Tan had to deal with was that she had to act like her mother thru the phone, since other people couldn't understand her mom. That resulted in problems when the mom finally went up face with the people that she was talking to and made it hard for people to understand Tan's mother. since Tan grew up understand the English her mother used, and at school she had to adjust to the English they used at school. Tan became a wirter considering that the professors didn't believe someone who was bilingual could become a writer so she can prove them wrong.
Tan decide to become a writter because she was good at it. People say that she couldn't be a writter because she was second lenguage but Tan prove them wrong. It was harded for her to learn English and also her mother.a
